“This is it.”

Mira nodded, gesturing Trase aside as she opened the door and peered into the room.

Don’t see anything out of place, Mira thought, though she wasn’t dumb enough to assume that the room wasn’t rigged to destroy evidence, at the very least.

Before the coup, Corian and his group had specialized in destabilizing the Southern Kingdoms beyond the reach of Imperial law, generally just turning them on each other and keeping them from becoming allied against the empire. Agents who did that sort of work inside enemy territory weren’t exactly the trusting sort.

“Aren’t you going in?”

Mira looked back at the Helena’s captain. “Not likely. Best case, he rigged his gear to be burned if someone messed with it.”

Trase hesitated. “And worst case?”

“He had access to your reactor.” Mira shook her head. “What do you think?”

From where she was standing, Mira could see at least three triggers. All of them were most likely decoys, though, because they were too sloppy, in her estimation.

“W-what are you going to do?” Trase asked, now looking around as if the entire ship had been revealed as a monster out to get her.

Which wasn’t really a bad analogy, Mira supposed.

“First, we get your crew off the ship, along with my people,” Mira said as she took a step back. “Then I’ll worry about what’s in the room. Come on, looks like you get to wait outside until we’re through here.”

Trase wasn’t going to argue with that.
